And yet, none of the above could top the event that I was able to exploit my Metroblogging credentials to gain a media to:

“Slave Leia Belly Dancing Lessons”, 12pm Friday at the Los Angeles Convention Center, as part of “Star Wars Celebration IV”, a four day convention commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the release of the original “Star Wars”.
There’s plenty more for your avid or even average fan: laser tag, a marathon screening of all six films, build a droid workshops, collector’s showrooms and auctions, celebrity panels, and even a Jedi Training Academy… but I’ll be starting off my visit by covering the informative session for ladies on how to dance like Leia did while as Jabba the Hutts slave in Return of the Jedi.

Okay, forget that she doesn’t actually dance in the movie - thats not the point. The point is there’s plenty of reasons to bring the whole family to the Star Wars Celebration.

The event runs Friday, May 24th, thru Monday the 28th. Day passes are $45 for adults, $25 for kids - or four day passes are $110 for adults, $45 for kids. More info can be found at the official convention site, and an “insider’s guide” and other tips can be found at StarWars.com.

Summer is heating up (”up” here) and so is SFT’s Free Tibet 2008 Olympics campaign. Read on to find out how you can get involved and help make August 2008 an historic moment for Tibet.

Team Tibet: Bring Tibet to the 2008 Olympic Games

Under Chinese occupation, Tibetans are denied their right to sovereignty and have been barred from competing in the Olympic Games on behalf of their country. Team Tibet represents the national aspirations of the Tibetan people for freedom and independence. At its core, Team Tibet is made up of competitive athletes who will try to register to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. Over the next year, Tibet Support Groups worldwide will take part in Team Tibet activities as part of the wider campaign to use the Beijing Olympics as a platform to bring about positive change for Tibet. Tibetans and their supporters are also encouraged to register at http://SupportTeamTibet.org and become an honorary member of Team Tibet.

Free Tibet 2008: One Year Countdown Day of Action

August 8th, 2007 marks the One Year Countdown to the opening ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. This is a symbolic moment for the Chinese government to promote its Olympics propaganda and mask the reality of life on the ground inside China and Tibet. On this day, Tibetans and supporters, under the Team Tibet banner, will expose China’s Olympics lies and bring the message of Free Tibet 2008 to Chinese Embassies and Consulates worldwide.

Please mark this date on your calendar. Download an August 8th outreach flier (click here to download as a word document and click here to download as a pdf file) and start organizing a One Year Countdown protest in your community. More materials will be available shortly.

Team Tibet: Baseball Stadium Actions - August 4th

In an effort to raise awareness about Tibet with sports writers and commentators, Tibetans and supporters will take part in coordinated Team Tibet actions at baseball stadiums across North America in the lead up to the One Year Countdown. Actions are being organized on Saturday, August 4th in the following cities: New York, Oakland, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, San Diego, Minneapolis, Washington, Los Angeles, Milwaukee. and Toronto.

Yingsel: Team Tibet 2008 Olympic Mascot

Since her defection from the Chinese Olympics Team, Yingsel has been traveling across Tibet and China to see for herself the true reality of China’s empty Olympic promises. Click on www.yingsel2008.org and read her most recent blog post about the Chinese government’s misguided plan to pave a multi million dollar highway leading up to Mount Everest base camp. Keep checking her blog for new materials and resources, including a downloadable Yingsel coloring book image for children.

A long-time supporter of SFT has generously donated her time to create life-sized Yingsel masks, which will be available to order in time for the Free Tibet 2008: One Year Countdown Day of Action on August 8th.
